The Fourth, Your Plans, and the Guest of the Day.

Continued from previous page.

I had a gig in Canton, Michigan. While I was there I stayed at the Fairfield Inn. I’ve stayed at some dumps that no would ever want to stay in. I’ve also stayed at some places most people dream about.

The Fairfield Inn is right in the middle, but boy, oh boy, did they make me feel like the King of Canton.

When I walked up to counter and said, “Hi. I’m checking in. My name is Al Duncan.” The clerk immediately smiled and said in a very enthusiastic voice, “Mr. Duncan we’ve been waiting for you!”

I was definitely surprised. When’s the last time a hotel clerk greeted you like that? I’m thinking to myself, “Man, am I really that famous?” (Not!)

“You are our guest of the day, Mr. Duncan”, she said pointing at a huge bulletin board with my name on it. It might as well have been a marquee as far as I was concerned.

It read: Welcome to the Fairfield Inn Al Duncan. Congratulations! You are our guest of the day.

By now I was seriously cheesin’. (Translation: I had a big smile on my face).  Meanwhile the clerk was busy handing me a gift bag full of goodies.

“So, how often do you all have a guest of the day?” I know…dumb question. But hey, I was still in shock.

“Everyday, Mr. Duncan. She answered me still smiling although she might have been thinking, “Duh!”

“We randomly choose a guest from our list of reservations. Please enjoy your stay and if there’s anything else we can help you with, let us know.”

And as if all of this wasn’t enough, she says, “By the way, Mr. Duncan, there is some fresh coffee, hot wings, fresh fruit, pastries, and chips over there. Please help yourself.”

I turned and saw a nice little evening spread and proceeded to help myself while showing off my gift bag to the other guests in the lobby.  The other guests were just as happy as I was because of the food.

After getting off of yet another delayed flight, what a nice surprise. Needless to say I was happy however the main thing is that I felt important and appreciated.

So here’s my challenge to you.  Make somebody (friend, family member, co-worker, client, etc.) feel important and appreciated today.
